What the #$*! [Bleep] Do We Know?!

— A Quantum Fable —

If you liked MindWalk, you’ll be even more excited about What the #$*! (Bleep) Do We Know!? Initially, the filmmakers couldn’t generate interest from a major studio or distributor, so they went outside the Hollywood system, directly to theater owners. As box office receipts continued to increase week after week — the opposite of a typical film trajectory (think My Big Fat Greek Wedding) — the majors eventually began calling. Surprise. A feisty lot, the filmmakers were encouraged by early success and planned to turn part of their production company into a distribution business, reaching for the brass ring themselves.

In case this little mind-game of a film didn’t get to your neck of the woods, check out its website to learn more and watch a trailer. Then, snatch the DVD and take a wonderfully challenging trip down the rabbit hole.

The filmmakers describe their work as “part documentary, part story, and part elaborate and inspiring visual effects and animations.” The main character, Amanda, played by Marlee Matlin, finds herself in an Alice-in-Wonderland world. As her day-in-the-life turns inside out, she’s forced to consider “the uncertain world of the quantum field hidden behind what we consider to be our normal waking reality.”

Interspersed with the mostly linear story of Amanda’s day are documentary style interviews with fourteen highly respected quantum physicists and mystics. The filmmakers view this illustrious group as the “Greek Chorus,” commenting on actions of the characters in the “story” of the film, and emphasizing the essential “interconnectedness of all things.” These experts also “introduce the Great Questions” of science and religion as they challenge viewers to consider that both fields “describe the same phenomena.”

With fantastic animated sequences and an infectious music track, this humorous, irreverent look at what is and what could be will take you for an out-of-this-world ride. Catch it if you can!
